Windsor adds Canpass lanes

WINDSOR, Ont. – The federal government has expanded a 19-month-old program that’s meant to help ease traffic congestion at this city’s international border crossings. Two new Canpass lanes have been added to allow low-risk commuters to cross the border more quickly, without the same usual scrutiny of customs officials.

The program is open to registered applicants with no criminal record, and who have not broken customs or immigration laws.

While the Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel each have an existing Canpass lane open from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. each day, a second lane is being added to each site, to be open at peak times.

The program began in August 1999 and more than 12,000 people have used the lanes more than 200,000 times. n
