UPDATE: DriveTest examiners not on strike…yet

TORONTO, Ont. — Local media has reported, and then retracted, news that DriveTest centres are now closed as talks broke down between the union representing workers (including driver examiners) and DriveTest itself.

A memo was posted by USW Local 9511 this morning at 7:15 a.m., informing driver examiners and other employees: “The bargaining committee is informing you to report to work. If we do not have an agreement shortly with the employer, the bargaining committee will request all employees out of the DriveTest centres and onto the picket line.”

If a strike does ensue, it’s expected the province will move quickly to extend the expiration dates of driver’s licences. However, if you’re looking to acquire an A/Z licence for the first time, you may want to call ahead or be forced to to wait. Services offered directly by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation will be unaffected.
