Customs officers call in sick en-masse at Peace Bridge
FORT ERIE, Ont. — There were reports of traffic chaos yesterday at the Peace Bridge as 18 Canadian Customs officers reportedly called in sick as part of an apparent labour dispute.
As a result, only three lanes were staffed and capacity was reduced from 1,000 vehicles per hour to less than 200, according to media reports.
Canadian Customs officers are reportedly upset by cost cuts that have altered employee schedules and resulted in less overtime, according to a report by CTV news. Traffic appears to be back to normal this morning, according to the Peace Bridge Web site, but there’s some concern further acts of protest could be staged.
