US Truck Tonnage Slips In September
ARLINGTON, Va. –US truck tonnage slipped 0.3% in September, putting the brakes on consecutive gains of 2.1% in both July and August.
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) Truck Tonnage Index was down 7.3% compared to September 2008, but that marked the best year-over-year result since November 2008, the ATA reported. In August, the index was down 7.5% compared to a year earlier.
“The trucking industry should not be alarmed by the very small decrease in September,” said ATA chief economist Bob Costello. “We took two steps forward in July and August and this was a miniscule step backward.”
He also said there will be more fluctuations to come on the road to recovery. “Between most economic indicators recovering and less of an overhang in inventories, I’m confident that the industry is still on the road to recovery.” •
