WASHINGTON, D.C. – Driver’s licences may soon take on a new level of sophistication to help promote tighter homeland security in the U.S.

The U.S. Congress will listen to testimony on strengthening driver’s licence and ID security through the U.S. Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, Subcommittee on Oversight of Government Management, Restructuring and the District of Columbia.

Betty Serian, vice-chair of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA), is set to testify on the matter. Serian, also the deputy secretary of safety administration with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, will make her appearance on Apr. 16, at approximately 10 a.m.

“In the days following Sept. 11, Americans quickly learned how easily the al Qaeda terrorists obtained state DMV-issued driver’s licences,” says an AAMVA press release. “The press reported that several of the 19 hijackers held driver’s licences from states that issued them without properly verifying the applicant’s identity.”

The AAMVA, together with its sister organization the Canadian Council of Motor Vehicle Administrators, says this situation must stop.
