MONTREAL, Que. – Canadian National (CN) and Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) have filed a petition with the U.S. Surface Transportation Board that suggests a 365-day schedule to review the proposed merger of the two railways.

The two are expected to file an application for Transportation Board approval after March 20.

Still, the railways have given a nod to concerns that the deal would limit competition. According to their statement to the board, “BNSF and CN have been talking to their customers and understand their concerns about service and competitive issues. BNSF and CN will be making proposals to resolve those issues in the near future.”

The two railway companies announced their merger hopes on Dec. 20, in a deal that could create a rail system stretching over 50,0000 miles, serving eight provinces and 32 states, and employing 67,000 people.

The new North American Railways would be headquartered in Montreal. n
