HALIFAX, N.S. – Following Premier John Hamm’s recent cabinet shuffle, there is a new minister holding the Transportation and Public Works portfolio in Nova Scotia.

Ron Russell becomes the new transport minister, while he also holds onto several other portfolios, including the Priorities and Planning Secretariat and government house leader.

Following terms of office on the West Hants school board and municipal council, Russell was first elected MLA for Hants West in 1978 and has been re-elected in every subsequent election.

Gordon Balser, the outgoing transport boss, retains three key portfolios – Economic Development, the Petroleum Directorate, and the Sydney Steel Corporation.

The cabinet’s size and membership remains unchanged at 11 members plus the premier, still the smallest executive council in recent history.

Outside the executive council, transport also received a new deputy minister.

Howard Windsor takes over the post after most recently acting as deputy for the new Department of Tourism and Culture. n
