TANS may join forces with a trade union

TRURO, N.S. – The Truckers Association of Nova Scotia (TANS) board of directors is currently investigating the possibility of a full affiliation with a trade union.

There has been a lot of talk of problems and concerns of years past in previous board meetings.

The board of directors has taken complaints from disgruntled members and is now tossing around the idea of a union affiliation. The Union of Operating Engineers will be approached about affiliation.

The type of affiliation the group is seeking resembles that of the Maritime and Northeast Pipeline.

Those who did not work on the pipeline received dispatch from their county, reported to a supervisor on site, did a days work and kept a log of working hours. Invoices could then be forwarded on a weekly basis to either BFC Marine or Atlantic Pipeline for payment.

Also included on the invoices were areas to deduct three per cent for the union affiliation.

If and when both parties accept the proposal, the plan will then be presented to the board of directors who will conduct a special meeting to discuss the opportunity with its membership.

The proposal will be voted on at the Annual General Meeting. For more details visit www.tans.ca.
