Volvo Trucks’ deliveries jump

STOCKHLOM, Sweden – Volvo Trucks’ delivery totals for the first three quarters of the year totaled 70,000 tractors worldwide.

Sales showed the following distribution:

Europe 34,333 (’99), 33,806 (’98), a two per cent increase;

North America 29,106 (’99), 24,412 (’98), a 19 per cent gain;

South America 3,133 (’99), 5,378(’98), a 42 per cent dip;

Asia 2,058 (’99), 3,266 (’98), a 37 per cent drop;

and all other markets 1,370 (’99), 1,558 (’98), a 12 per cent decline. Overall, Volvo’s truck sales between January and October increased by two per cent over the same period last year, growing from 68,420 to 70,000. The continuous boom in the North American trucking industry also allowed the company to expand capacity at its New River Valley, Va. truck plant to an annual rate of 38,000 units. The company says it is looking forward to ending the year on a high note and its order book is, “stable on a high level.” n
