GREENVILLE, S.C. Michelin North America has joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership.

The national partnership aims to help reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions from ground freight transportation. The SmartWay Transport Partnership is promoting long-term cost savings, fuel consumption reduction and efficiency improvement, therefore reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil.

Michelin North America was recognized for its participation by EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt during a press event Feb. 9 in Washington, D.C.

"By joining the SmartWay Transport Partnership, Michelin is furthering its commitment to environmental leadership and corporate responsibility," said Joe Brister, corporate environmental manager for Michelin NortAmerica.

"Michelin has worked closely with the EPA for many years as a strong proponent of environmental causes in the tire industry."
