Alberta considers periodic road re-tests

EDMONTON, Alta. — Alberta may require drivers to be re-tested periodically in order to maintain their driving privileges, announced Transportation Minister Ed Stelmach.

Stelmach said his ministry as well as the Alberta Motor Association (AMA) and Centre for Injury Prevention favour "a measured, timely, re-examination of every driver in the province."

"That is something we are looking at investigating," Stelmach said in the provincial Legislature yesterday. "We are doing a review of driver safety in the province at the moment and if it’s something that’s proposed, we certainly will be looking at bringing it forward."

It’s an issue that was agreed upon by Opposition party members, including Liberal transportation critic Bill Bonner.

“I think there has to be a review (of drivers’ abilities),” said Bonner. “I think probably the best time to start doing that might be every 15 or 20 years, perhaps even 10. I don’t know what exactly the period of time would be.”

Don Szarko of the AMA told local media Albertans collectively have one of the worst driving records in the country. He said testing could determine a driver’s reaction time, motor skills and night vision.
