OTTAWA, Ont. — The federal government yesterday tabled the International Bridges and Tunnels Act, which will give government the legislative authority required to oversee the approval of international bridges and tunnels.

“For the first time, the Government of Canada is establishing a legislative framework to enable it to exercise authority over international bridges and tunnels,” said Transport Ministerl, Lawrence Cannon. “Our government has a responsibility to ensure that any crossing supports the national interests for safety, security and the efficient movement of people and goods. This act also meets the government’s agenda of securing Canada’s borders, improving infrastructure and supporting the creation of jobs through international trade.”

Under the amendments, the feds would provide the governor-in-council with the authority to approve the construction or alteration of international bridges and tunnels. There are currently 24 international vehicular bridges and tunnels linking Canada and the U.S. The bridges and tunnels carry the vast majority of Canadian trade with the U.S.

The feds say the new legislation will ensure the structures are safe and secure and that they are altered or maintained in a way that will maximize their long-term viability. The new regs are also designed to ensure the bridges and tunnels are being commercially operated in a manner that will ensure the efficient flow of goods and people.
