ST. JOHNS, Nfld. — Newfoundland ushered in a Progressive Conservative government yesterday in record-breaking fashion.

Incumbent Premier Danny Williams won in a landslide election with about 70% of Newfoundland voters favouring his Tory party. The Tories gained nine new districts and now control 43 in a 48-seat House.

“This is about our future, our time has come in Newfoundland and Labrador,” Williams announced following the victory. “We campaigned (last election) on ‘no more giveaways.’ And what did we give you? No more giveaways. And we can promise you four more years of no more giveaways.”

Yesterdays election win was the most lopsided in the provinces history. Williams warned he would be taking on the federal government on key issues such as equalization payments.
