OOIDA lauds nixing of Mexican truck program

GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — American owner/operators are applauding the cancellation of a controversial demonstration project that allowed Mexican trucks to operate in the US.

President Barrack Obama nixed the program when he signed an omnibus appropriations bill into law yesterday. Included in the bill was a provision to remove funding from the pilot program, which was opposed by various groups including the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

“The will of Congress and the American people will finally be fulfilled,” said OOIDA executive vice-president Todd Spencer. “By law, this program should have never been started in the first place.”

“We thank Congress for making the safety and security of our nation’s highways a priority over the economic interests of a few multinational corporations,” he added.
