Takhar removed of transport portfolio

TORONTO, Ont. — Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty has replaced Transport Minister Harinder Takhar in a minor cabinet shuffle.

He will be replaced by former Energy Minister Donna Cansfield, a relatively inexperienced member of cabinet. Takhar has been named the province’s new Minister of Small Business and Entrepreneurship.

Takhar’s term as transport minister was plagued with accusations of conflict of interest. Now, the Ontario trucking industry will have to wait to see how Cansfield addresses the Ontario Trucking Association’s controversial speed limiter plan. Takhar’s office initially reported a ruling could come as early as January but there has yet to be a decision from government.

Cansfield represents Etobicoke Centre and was elected in 2003 after serving 15 years as a school trustee. She has served as parliamentary assistant to the minister of energy before taking that post herself.
