U.S. begins background checks for hazmat drivers
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Fingerprint checks for all U.S. -based hazmat drivers renewing or transferring the endorsements starts May 31.
New hazmat drivers were required to undergo fingerprint-based background checks as of Jan. 31.
Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia have elected to collect fingerprints and other information via Transport Security Administration at designated fingerprint collection locations.
Seventeen states have elected to collect applicant fingerprints themselves, via their own transportation departments.Registration fees will vary.

Canadian drivers are not yet required by the U.S. government to undergo fingerprint-based background checks, but are expected to be required to do so in the near future.
