COBOURG, Ont. — The Ontario Liberals are dishing out $24 million to expand Hwy 401 to six lanes between Port Hope and Cobourg, Ont.

“About 45,000 drivers use this stretch of the 401, and widening this section of road will keep traffic moving safely and efficiently,” Transportation Minister Donna Cansfield.

The work will also include upgrading ramps and enhancing the existing lighting at the Burnham St. and County Rd. 28 interchanges to improve access to the highway; repairing the Hamilton-Hope Township underpass; widening Theatre Rd. as well as widening the Cobourg Creek culvert and installing new traffic lights at the Burnham St. interchange to improve road safety.

Construction will be done in stages with short-term lane closures to minimize disruption to drivers and is expected to be complete by fall 2007.

By 2020 traffic volume is expected to increase by 30 percent along this section of highway, says the ministry.
