9 business tips to continent-wide recognition

ALEXANDRIA, VA- The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) and driver training company CarriersEdge reveal the success secrets behind Canada’s best fleets to drive for.

The TCA and CarriersEdge have named the 20 Best Fleets to Drive For in North America and amongst the winners were five Canadian for-hire carriers: Bison Transport of Winnipeg, Man.; Erb Group of New Hamburg, Ont.; Kriska Holdings Ltd. of Prescott, Ont.; Liberty Linehaul Inc. of Ayr, Ont,; and TransPro Freight Systems Ltd. of Milton, Ont.

Here’s what makes these trucking companies stand out:

  • Bison’s company-developed Neighborhood Watch program allows any employee or contractor to report any inappropriate or unacceptable activity anonymously;
  • Bison’s custom-built performance management system shows drivers a three-year history across multiple safety categories, along with KPIs like cost per mile, fuel mileage, idle time. All information is available to drivers at any time via the company intranet site;
  • Erb Group has a formalized continuing education program that has varying levels of reimbursement based on course relevance;
  • Erb also does job task analysis of each position, surveyed by Employee Representative to Management and Management together;
  • Erb tapes the drivers winning awards through their Pro-Drive program and shares the clips on Erb TV to prove tips to other employees;
  • Kriska starts pay based on verifiable experience and rewards seasoned drivers for their expertise;
  • Kriska’s ride-along program lets management see what’s really going on at customer sites, giving them the chance to deal with potential issues before they become problems;
  • Liberty Linehaul has customer report cards pinpoint areas for improvements, which allows the company to proactively improve the experience for drivers;
  • Transpro has free gym memberships for all drivers and contractors, and early adoption of Healthy Trucker program has had dramatic effects on driver health.

“Transpro and Liberty each had a good overall mix of programs, better than 90 percent driver satisfaction rate and strong safety and retention scores as well,” CarriersEdge’s Mark Murrell told todaystrucking.com. “Put it all together and it was enough to get them into the Top 20.”
