That is about 0.5 per cent lower than the first quarter of 2001, while average expenses climbed 0.2 per cent.

The numbers are based on the performance of the top 85 for-hire motor carriers in Canada.

All told, the top carriers generated operating revenues of $1.81 billion and expenses of $1.73 billion during the first quarter.
