B.C. Premier appoints panel to review TransLink

VICTORIA — B.C.’s Liberal government says it will review the operations of the provincial agency responsible for the Greater Vancouver Regional District’s (GVRD) major roads, bridges and transit system.

The government wants a better understanding how TransLink works and raises revenue and will appoint a three-member panel to make recommendations on the roles of TransLink and the province, reports Canadian Press.

TransLink — formally known as the Greater Vancouver Transportation Authority — has come under fire over its taxation policies.

Eight years after it’s creation, it’s time to examine the agency’s governance structure, says Transportation Minister Kevin Falcon.

The panel’s recommendations are due by the fall, according to CP.

The British Columbia Trucking Association has been at odds with the transportation agency at times. The carrier group challenged several of TransLink’s proposals in the recent past, including a plan that would have forced drivers to pony up a vehicle levy in order to enter downtown Vancouver; and the agency’s tolling system on the Golden ears Bridge.
