BC waves permits and prorating for trucks under 11,800 kg

VICTORIA — British Columbia is allowing greater truck reciprocity for all two-axle commercial vehicles with a registered weight of less than 11,794 kg from other Canadian provinces.

Going into effect April 1, the rule change permits outside intra-provincial trucks to travel in B.C. for up to 90 days without the owner having to buy a non-resident permit or pro-rating of the vehicle. Inter-provincial vehicles, on the other hand, will receive unlimited operation status under the changes, which are part of revisions through the Canadian Agreement on Vehicle Registration (CAVR).

Farm and recreational vehicles are also included under the new rule. In B.C., pick-up trucks with a registered GVW over 8,200 kg are considered commercial vehicles by the ministry.

To be eligible for reciprocity, two axle trucks must be licensed at the owner’s home province and registered in the base province.

Permits or prorate licences are still required for out-of-province commercial vehicles operating on a BC highway over 11,794 kg GVW or with three or more axles.
