Big Freight makes big purchase of warehouser

STEINBACH, Man. — Big Freight System is continuing its transformation into a diversified supply-chain-management business with the acquisition of Winnipeg-based Paramount Storage.

Paramount Storage has close to 400,000 square feet of warehousing space in three different buildings near the Inkster Industrial Park.

Big Freight had already been using Paramount’s warehouses as a third-party provider.

Big Freight’s CEO, Gary Coleman, told the Winnipeg Free Press that the company has been focusing on developing supply-chain-management solutions, including warehousing.

"It is a strategic piece of our long-term vision," he told the paper.

Manitoba Trucking Association executive director Bob Dolyniuk, said the move represents a growing trend among larger freight haulers.

Big Freight started negotiating with Paramount after the company’s 72-truck freight hauling division, Paramount Truck Lines was placed in receivership last month.

According to the Free Press, Paramount was saddled with too much debt as revenue decreased and primary costs such as fuel went up during the recession.
