Canadian Trucking Toll Evaders Targeted by Maine

AUGUSTA, ME — Officials in Maine say they have had enough of trucks from Canada using the Maine Turnpike and not paying tolls.

Legislation being considered by state lawmakers would allow the Secretary of State’s office to suspend out-of-state violators from using Maine’s roads, after the owner of an offending vehicle has been notified, according to CentralMaine.com.

Currently, the state has agreements with neighboring states that allow it to go after those who breeze through toll booths without paying, but when it comes to those from Canada they are usually out of luck.

The worst trucking offenders from Canada, according to the story, come from New Brunswick with more than 30 trucks from there having 10 violations or more.

Officials admit if the legislation is passed and signed into law it will not eliminate the problem entirely, but should allow the state to go after the worst offenders.
