TORONTO, Ont. – Canadians purchased 34,288 Class 8 trucks in 2018, recording one of the strongest truck sales volumes on record. In contrast, the market consumed 26,141 Class 8 trucks in 2017 and 23,037 of such units in 2016.

Canada’s market share leader for 2018 was Freightliner, accounting for 31.5% of the Class 8 truck sales. Kenworth held the second spot with 15.6% of the market, while Volvo rounded out the top three at 13.5%.

Freightliner’s market share was even stronger south of the border, accounting for 36.3% of the 250,545 Class 8 sales. Kenworth came in second at 14.9%, and its Paccar siblings at Peterbilt held the third spot with 14.8%.

International accounted for 35.9% of Canada’s 7,063 Class 7 truck sales, while Freightliner held the top position in the U.S. with 46.3% of the 63,828 sales.

Hino was the top selling Canadian nameplate in Class 6, with 36% of the 1,548 trucks sold. South of the border, Freightliner led the market in this vehicle class as well, accounting for 32% of the 71,626 sales.

Ford was the clear market share leader for Class 5 sales in both countries, accounting for 49.5% of the 7,564 sold in Canada and 63.5% of the 81,347 sold in the U.S.
