Challenger makes specialized acquisition

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. — Almost a year after expanding its special commodities division, Challenger Motor Freight is at it again.

In November 2008, the Cambridge, Ont.-based carrier entered into an agreement to purchase certain aspects of INX PRESS Corporation, a fleet specializing in the transport of heavy equipment and over-dimensional freight.

And just yesterday, Challenger revealed its purchase of certain assets of the special commodities business of Sandrock Specialized Carriers, an Ontario-based carrier that also focuses on over-dimensional transportation for customers.

“The addition of the Sandrock business is a significant moment for both our companies,” said Dan Einwechter, chairman and CEO for Challenger Motor Freight. “With the addition of their equipment and expertise, we look forward to expanding our special commodities division to provide Challenger’s innovative transportation solutions to a wider range of customers as well as our combined existing client base. Having Mark Sandrock and his team join our new division, Sandrock Specialized Transport, will enhance service offers to existing Challenger accounts as well as provide Sandrock’s customer with much broader service offerings from a single source, a true win-win situation.”

Sandrock Specialized Carriers was founded in 1999 by Mark Sandrock and is a special commodities carrier focusing on transporting heavy equipment and over-dimensional freight. The company is recognized as a preferred dedicated carrier for a large number of international corporations requiring this level of expertise.

Challenger employs in excess of 2,300 people and operates 1,500 trucks and 3,300 trailers. In addition to their facility in Cambridge, Challenger has terminals in Montreal, Vancouver, and Toronto. Challenger additionally operates Elgin Motor Freight, Cam Hiltz Trucking, Lodwick Transport, and MCX as unique separate entities.
