COMPETITION WATCH: Heartland Express expands into Western U.S.

CORALVILLE, Iowa — A large U.S. carrier has announced it’s spreading its wings to better cover the Western U.S.

Heartland Express is expanding into the Western U.S. with a new operation based out of Phoenix, Az. The company says it will also be expanding into other western markets.

Currently, Heartland Express has eight regional operating centers in addition to its headquarters. The company has grown steadily in recent years, acquiring five other trucking firms since 1987. It reported gross revenues of US$457.1 million with a 79.5 per cent operating ratio in 2004 with US$517 million in total assets.
