Con-Way trimming down operations

SAN MATEO, Calif. — In an attempt to reduce costs in a down market, North American LTL carrier Con-way Freight announced it is closing 40 service centers to cut costs by next month.

The trucking firm said freight normally handled at those locations would be transferred to 100 of the closest service centers. The company will be down to 300 total service centers across the U.S. and Canada.

The company’s Quebec City terminal is the only affected Canadian facility, a company spokesman confirmed to todaystrucking.com.

The move, along with plans to adjust routes and cut mileage to improve network efficiency, is expected to save the fleet about $35 million a year.

About 75 percent of affected workers will be given job opportunities at other nearby locations.
