FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Hwy. 63, the main route to the Northern Alberta oilsands, was closed once again yesterday as massive wildfires ravaged timberland in the region.

The RCMP and Alberta Transportation shut down the highway as a 70,000-hectare wildfire continued to straddle the highway.

The highway is blocked from Wandering River to where it intersects with Hwy. 881, just south of Fort McMurray. Vehicles up to one ton were allowed to detour to secondary Hwy. 881, 130 kilometres of which is gravel road.

Updates are available by calling 780-799-8000.
