Freight Costs Rise for 5th Straight Month

This is a summary showing Total Freight Costs for over the road shipments starting in January 2008.

TORONTO — The overall cost of ground transportation continued to climb for the fifth straight month in December, according to the Canadian General Freight Index (CGFI).

“Both base rates and fuel increased in December,” said Doug Payne, president and COO, Nulogx. “With December’s increase, total transportation costs finished one percent above a year ago.”

The cost of ground transportation has been slowly creeping up on all segments – Domestic LTL and Truckload, Cross Border LTL and TL over the past several months, according to Payne. And in December, shippers paid 1.6 percent more than they did in November.

The base rate index, which excludes the impact of accessorial charges assessed by carriers, increased by 0.27 percent when compared to November 2013.

Average fuel surcharges assessed by carriers decreased. Fuel was 20.84 percent of base rates in December versus 20.54 percent in November.

The CGFI, which is sponsored by Nulogx, highlights the changes in prices paid for freight transportation by Canadian shippers and represents general truck transportation, but excludes bulk, liquid and other specialty services.

Nulogx helps shippers and carriers secure competitive agreements, evaluate performance and develop business plans.
