HighwayMaster chairman resigns

DALLAS — William Saunders, chairman and co-founder of HighwayMaster Communications, has resigned to pursue other interests, the company said.

William C. Kennedy Jr., vice chairman of the Board, will serve as interim chairman until a new chairman is chosen.

HighwayMaster provides wireless voice and data communications services to the commercial trucking and service vehicle industries. Saunders was seen as the driving force and key architect behind the six-year-old company’s technology, which combines cellular networks with Global Positioning System (satellite) vehicle location technology.

Through strategic alliances with an array of wireless service providers, HighwayMaster offers seamless wireless communications in more than 99% of the available cellular coverage areas in the United States and 100% of the A-side cellular coverage areas in Canada.

The company has not performed well in the past year, and in June announced it was restructuring and cutting 43 jobs, or 10% of its workforce.
