CALGARY, Alta. — Imperial Oil has added a new product to the family of Esso XD-3 Extra heavy-duty engine oils in further preparation for upcoming emission regulation changes.

In October, Imperial Oil will introduce Esso XD-3 Extra CJ-4 15W-40 heavy-duty engine oil to meet the American Petroleum Institute’s API CJ-4 diesel engine oil specification, which encompasses the new requirements for Proposed Category 10 (PC-10).

Esso XD-3 Extra CJ-4 15W-40 will exceed category requirements for soot control, wear protection, oil consumption and deposit control, according to the company. The new formulation will be backwards compatible and meet the requirements of API CI-4 and CI-4 PLUS, and will deliver significant performance enhancement, helping to extend the life of both new and older engines, as well as new emissions after-treatment systems.

The new Esso XD-3 Extra CJ-4 15W-40 is designed to meet the requirements of Caterpillar ECF-3, Cummins, CES 20081, Detroit Diesel Power Guard 93K214, Volvo VDS-4 and Mack EO-O Premium Plus.

“With new U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emission regulations for heavy-duty vehicles taking affect in 2007, diesel engine oil performance requirements will become more stringent,” said Colin Cochran, line of business advisor for Imperial Oil Lubricants and Specialties. “As with the previous upgrades of the Esso XD-3 Extra brand in the Canadian marketplace, Imperial Oil continues to set new standards for advanced lubricant technology and performance.”

Imperial Oil tests XD-3 Extra in engines from all major manufacturers in the lab and by logging millions of kilometers in Canadian on-road and off-road fleets. Through the amount of resources and time put into research and testing, Imperial Oil is confident that XD-3 Extra heavy-duty engine oils will deliver long engine life, help minimize engine wear, and reduce deposit formation.

“We have a relentless commitment to research and development that helps keep our products at the pinnacle of performance, which helps keep your vehicle at its peak,” added Cochran.
