Maersk raises transatlantic rates for next year

NEW YORK – Container shipping giant Maersk says it will increase general rates in 2011 on its transatlantic lanes.

The carrier announced a $300 per container hike on April 1 on all cargo between Canada and the U.S. to northern Europe and the Mediterranean; and second increase of the same amount on July 1, though the adjustment is "subject to change based on market conditions."

A third rate increase on Oct. 1 is "to be announced."?

The rate increase applies to both dry and reefer boxes.

"The outlook for the next year is dominated by increased cost of charter for vessels and a rise in the cost of servicing inland locations," the company sated. "Moreover, trade imbalances are expected to cast additional pressure on the cost of ensuring equipment availability."
