Michigan powerbroker buys four intermodal firms

WARREN, Mich. — Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel Moroun has acquired four intermodal freight companies through Universal Truckload Services Inc.

Universal said that its purchase of Los Angeles-based Marc Largent Inc.; Houston-based Diamond Logistics Inc.; Memphis, Tenn.-based Assure Intermodal L.L.C.; and Seattle-based DiJulio Enterprises Inc. begins a westward expansion for the company.

According to Crains Detroit News, the new firms will be folded into Warren, Mich.-based Universal’s Mason Dixon Intermodal subsidiary.

Moroun and his son Matthew Moroun, who is also chairman of the company, have a 65 percent controlling stake in Universal. The elder Moroun also owns trucking company CenTra Inc.

Moroun is known for his ownership of the Ambassador Bridge, which acts as the link across Windsor, Ont. and Detroit — the busiest trade gateway in the world. It is the only major private crossing between Canada and the U.S.

Recently, Moroun has been rumoured to be interested in securing rights for a second bridge across the Detroit River. A binational selection committee has recommended the bridge be built in southwest Windsor and Detroit, which is very close to land Moroun owns or is in the process of buying.
