National Safety Code Compliance Date Extended

TORONTO — The Ontario Trucking Association (OTA) said today that the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) extended the transition period for carriers to comply with National Safety Code Standard 11B “Periodic Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections” until January 1, 2015.

The original compliance deadline was set for July 1, 2013, but as there are currently revisions being made to the national standard, MTO decided to wait for the updates rather than introduce two different versions within a short period of time.

The OTA said that the MTO has notified all Motor Vehicle Inspection Stations of the extension.

No significant inspection requirements will be added to the revised code, OTA noted. “However, it will add clarity and consistent language that is lacking in the current standard. The new standard will be published by the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA).”

The OTA said it has developed educational and reference materials for fleets and maintenance facilities. They’ll also be offering a series of voluntary training and certification programs for fleets and service technicians.
