N.B. Gives $425K to Truck Driving Program
GRAND FALLS, NB— New Brunswick’s provincial government is giving $425,000 to create a province-wide truck driving program and ease the driver shortage in Atlantic Canada.
“Jobs and the economy are our government’s top priorities,” said Environment and Local Government Minister Danny Soucy. “This new truck-driver training program will help develop new drivers to assist in filling a gap in the trucking industry within our province and Atlantic Canada.”
The Grand Falls campus of Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick is currently the only location that the 12-week Francophone course is offered. With the new funds, the course will see a debut in the Kent region in November 2014, the Acadian Peninsula in February 2015 and in Campbellton in May 2015.
“The offering of this new course is courtesy of an amazing partnership between government, academia and the private sector to respond to the growing demand in the local industry,” Soucy said.
The funding will come through the province’s Department of Post-Secondary, Education, Training and Labour as well as the Northern New Brunswick Economic Development and Innovation Fund. The mobile training centre will move between the aforementioned locations.
“This centre is real proof of innovation in training in New Brunswick,” said president and CEO of the Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick Liane Roy. “In addition to the theoretical and practical components on the truck, the two driving simulators will help students enter the workforce quickly and efficiently.”
