New bridges to improve PEI road network

CHARLOTTETOWN — This month, workers from Prince Edward Island’s Department of Transportation will be busy replacing two bridges on the provincial road network.

The first of the two replacements is the Glenwood Bridge on Route 14, The North Cape Coastal Drive, in Glenwood, Prince County. Construction there is expected to get underway in the next week or so. That bridge will be reduced to one lane only for most of the construction phase of the project. The final phase of construction will see the bridge close completely for two days only. A detour will be posted during that time. The new Glenwood Bridge should be complete near the end of October.

The other bridge replacement will occur on the Fox River Road near Murray Harbour in Kings County. That bridge will be completely closed to traffic once construction begins in mid-to-late August. A detour will be posted along routes 18 and 348 for re-routed traffic. This project is expected to be complete around the first week of November.

The Minister of Transportation and Public Works Ron MacKinley says these two bridges will provide a marked improvement to the provincial highway network. “Our goal is to keep Island roads as safe as possible for all road users. The replacement of these two aging structures demonstrates this government’s commitment to that goal.”
