New protection for mountain travelers

HOPE, B.C. — A new rock net catch fence is being installed along a stretch of Highway 1 in B.C.

The province’s Transportation and Infrastructure Department is putting up the new fence at Hell’s Gate Bluff about 50 km north of Hope, B.C. The fence will be 65 metres long and four metres high, and will be installed on the rock slope approximately 30 metres above the roadway. The fencing is designed to stop and hold multiple rock falls.

The installation will begin in October. Most of the construction will be on the slope with little impact to traffic, but drivers can expect occasional delays between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays.
