Ontario-based Home Hardware driver wins national driving championships

LANGLEY, B.C. — Rob Marshall, a professional driver representing Home Hardware and Team Ontario, was named Grand Champion and Rookie of the Year at this year’s National Truck Driving Championships.

The Team Trophy was won by Manitoba, while B.C. drivers John Broker and Jose Lecinana did the host province proud, placing first and third in the tandem-tandem and single-single divisions, respectively.

The Nationals, hosted by the B.C. Trucking Association, took place Sept. 21 at the Tradex Centre in Abbotsford.

Grand Champion Marshall competed in the straight truck division, scoring a total of 430 points out of a possible 500. That was 69 higher than the average score of 361. He has won provincial competitions before, but because it was his first time competing in the Nationals, he qualified for, and won, Rookie of the Year honours.

Drivers competed in a series of events, including: a written test; a pre-trip inspection; and a driving competition. The weather held off for the competition, despite the threat of storms, organizers say.

Winners include: Marshall, Home Hardware, Team Ontario, Grand Champion and Rookie of the Year; Jason Novak, Canadian Freightways, Team Manitoba, Safety Award; and Team Manitoba, featuring Brian Hrabarchuk (Con-way Freight), Ken Wiebe (EDB Enterprises), Ronald Poirier (TST Overland Express), Jason Novak (Canadian Freightways) & Howard McAfee (H & T Trucking), Team Trophy.

Category winners include: Marshall, Home Hardware, Ontario, straight truck; Clary Ward, Con-Way Freight, Ontario, single-single; Ronald Poirier, TST Overland Express, Manitoba, single-tandem; John Broker, Martin Brower Trucking, B.C., tandem-tandem; Ken Wiebe, EBD Enterprises, Manitoba, Super-B.
