Possible reward for information on fence theft

BELLEDUNE, N.B. — Police are looking for thieves who cut and made off with a one-kilometer stretch of an experimental fence designed to keep moose off the highway in Belledune, N.B.

Two weeks ago, the intertwined nylon cord and copper wire that make up the electrified fence vanished. The next day it was repaired at a cost of about $2,000.

Belledune Mayor Joe Noel says there have not been any breaks in the case since then and there’s now talk of a reward being posted to find the culprits.

The moose fence in Belledune runs along both sides of the highway for five km and is an attempt to reduce the high number of traffic deaths in that area.

“I’m disappointed that anyone would do that and endanger people’s lives,” says Noel.
