Protestors could block roads today

CALGARY, Alta. — Two protests were held in downtown Calgary yesterday as G8 Summit leaders arrived in Alberta, however, traffic disruptions were kept to a minimum.

Last night about 1,000 demonstrators shut down part of McLeod Tr. by the Stampede grounds and traffic had to be re-routed along the always busy 17 Ave.

Both of yesterday’s protests were peaceful, but there is talk of roadblocks today as protestors attempt to shut down the downtown core. Although protest groups haven’t publicly stated their plans, there have been rumors that the protests will move from downtown Calgary this morning, to the Trans-Canada Hwy. between Calgary and Kananaskis later in the day.

That could cause major headaches for truckers trying to cross through Calgary en-route to B.C. or Saskatchewan.
