Province says cash on hand for new Windsor bridge

WINDSOR, Ont. — The government of Ontario promises that a new Windsor-Detroit border crossing is a priority, adding that the province has its share of the construction bill ready.

Finance Minister Dwight Duncan made the comments to the Windsor Star last week after announcing his $1.4 billion financial plan, which includes $900 million for public infrastructure.

Duncan said his government is fully backing the Detroit River International Crossing study — a binational committee of government officials and stakeholders charged with selecting the site for a new bridge. He also said he supports Windsor’s GreenLink project — a plan drafted by traffic expert Sam Schwartz to construct a below-grade, covered artery to the new crossing.

However, Duncan told the newspaper that he wonders where Ottawa’s promised $400 million is for the Gateway project.

Last month, federal Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon reaffirmed Ottawa’s commitment to DRIC study. He also said that he’s in the process of seeking public-private partnerships (P3s) to design, build, finance and operate the Canadian inspection plaza and portion of a new bridge.
