Retread now, or sell with prices high: RTA

FALLS CHURCH, Va. – There a severe shortage of retreadable truck tires as another round of tire price hikes hit this month, according to the Retread Tire Association.

The shortage is having a negative impact on customers who retread tires or buy retreads – also called casings, says RTA managing director Harvey Brodsky.

"Retreads act as a brake on new tire prices. Whenever there is a shortage of retreads, new tire manufacturers do not have any reason to hold back on raising their prices, and everyone who purchases truck tires feels the pain in their checkbooks," he said in a news release.

Volatile market conditions, supply pressures and escalating raw materials costs have led to most commercial tire makers hiking tire prices by up to 12 percent.

Truckers sitting on retreadable casings should either have them retreaded now, or sell them with prices as high as they are, Brodsky recommends.

"Retreaders are hungry for retreadable casings and are willing to pay a premium for popular sizes of truck tires," he says.
