Satellite records place Ontario truckers at a disadvantage

TORONTO — The Ontario Trucking Association wants provincial transport officials to rethink the way they use satellite records taken from trucks.

OTA says Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation should reconsider allowing enforcement officers to use carrier satellite records to conduct facility audits, as well as requiring Ontario carriers to retain satellite records for six months.

Ontario is the only jurisdiction in Canada that has a policy allowing enforcement to use satellite records.

“In the interests of fairness and harmonization with other jurisdictions, and so that all carriers operating in the province are treated equally, OTA is asking MTO to review its policy, especially in light of the uncertainty surrounding a future US rulemaking on how carriers will be expected to monitor driver’s hours of service, the future US rule making on the use of electronic on board computers, and the approach to be taken with the new Canadian hours of service rules,” OTA said in a notice to members.
