Shelves Empty in Maritimes Due to Weather, Traffic Issues

ST. JOHN’S, NL- Newfoundlanders had a difficult time finding certain grocery items last week as weather disruptions delayed ferries and trucks and prevented many goods from getting on the island, according to media reports.

Ice conditions and weather systems this winter have been the worst seen in decades. Marine Atlantic ferries have had serious delays all through the month of March, it seems, with many ferry crossings being severely delayed or altogether cancelled.

Reports claim a backlog of around 350 tractor-trailer loads of food are stuck at the ferry terminal in North Sydney, waiting to cross to Port aux Basques.

“In normal circumstance we can catch up pretty quickly, between 24 and 48 hours,” said Marine Atlantic’s Darrell Mercer. “But unfortunately, with the conditions that we’re experiencing, it’s a little difficult to predict simply because they can change at a moment’s notice right now.”
