TALAHASSEE, FL. — Sunshine State cops won’t be busting Canadian drivers who don’t carry international driving licences, they announced Thursday afternoon.

After a story appeared Thursday morning stating that a new law in Florida requires all foreign drivers, Canadians included, to carry international licences, state officials told todaystrucking.com they were “swamped” with calls.

Thursday afternoon, the State’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced they won’t be enforcing the weird law. Immediately.

The new rules, the Department said in a statement, “may violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic (1949), an international treaty to which the United States is a signatory.

“Therefore, the Florida Highway Patrol will defer enforcement of violations of the amended statutory section until a final determination of the alignment of the amendment with the treaty can be made.”
