Southwestern Express wins TCA safety award

GUELPH, Ont. (Jan. 28) — Southwestern Express has taken first place in its division in the 1998 Annual Fleet Safety Contest of the U.S. Truckload Carriers Association (TCA).

A division of MacKinnon Transport based in Guelph, Ont., the company won in the category for fleets running total mileage between 5.1 and 15 million miles annually. The award is based on reportable-accident frequency ratios.

Southwestern is now eligible to win one of two grand prizes at the TCA annual meeting in Las Vegas, March 14-18. One grand prize is awarded to fleets with annual mileage under 25 million miles, and another to those above that mileage mark.

Grand prize competitors are judged on their safety program at large, including driver hiring practices, maintenance regime, and accident investigation procedures. Trailmobile Inc. sponsors the award.

Southwestern is headed by president Evan MacKinnon and vice president Ray Haight. Bill Kalbhenn is safety manager.
