Stay or go? HST verdict in BC later this month

VICTORIA – British Columbians will have to wait until late this month to find out if the 12 percent HST will stick around or whether the old split tax system will return.

According to news reports, August 25 is when Elections BC expects to have the verdict on the provincial referendum seeking to extinguish the controversial tax.

If voters choose o scrap the HST, they’ll go back to paying five per-cent GST alongside a seven per-cent PST.

While consumers don’t like it, the HST is generally favored by business groups, including the trucking industry.

They say that the harmonized tax equals the competitive playing field with other provinces and U.S. states that have consolidated tax regimes.

Ontario, Quebec and all three Maritime provinces have also implemented the HST.
