Transport Canada to review bus safety

OTTAWA — Public consultations on bus safety will take place in early 1999 to examine issues ranging from seat belts to general maintenance standards, Transport Canada announced.

The meetings will involve federal, provincial, and territorial governments, as well as public safety organizations, bus operators and manufacturers, and the general public.

Transport Canada administers new vehicle construction standards under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act, and contributes to motor carrier operational safety standards under the Motor Vehicle Transport Act and the National Safety Code for Motor Carriers. Transport Canada also applies over 35 federal safety standards to the design and construction of school buses manufactured in or imported into Canada.
