UPS won’t predict top shipping day this year

ATLANTA — For the first time since going public a decade ago, UPS has declined to release a projection for the busiest shipping day of the fall peak season.

According to the Associate Press, weak pre-Christmas sales and the recent financial crisis in the U.S. are making it difficult for the world’s largest parcel carrier to offer a forecast, which it has been doing since 1999.

The company had been scheduled to discuss its peak projection on Tuesday, but that news conference been canceled.

Last year, UPS delivered more than 22 million packages on its peak shipping day, which was Dec. 19, and it hired about 60,000 seasonal employees.

"…While it is a bit unusual for UPS not to make peak projections, these are unusual times for the U.S. economy," said UPS spokesman Norman Black.
