Volkwagen to develop its own line of heavy trucks, VW official says

HANOVER, Germany (Aug. 4, 1999) — Unable to buy a heavy truck manufacturer, Volkswagen AG will use its own factory in Brazil to begin developing its own line of heavy trucks, according to Handelsblatt, a German financial newspaper.

The paper quoted an interview with Bernd Wiedemann, VW management board member in charge of commercial vehicles.

Volkswagen, Europe’s largest auto producer, would be able to keep product development costs low by using modular production processes and sub-assembled vehicle systems, Wiedemann said.
